Sr. Joellen speaking during the PHJC Community Days 2012

Recently, Sister Joellen Tumas, the Director of Casa Catalina Basic Needs Center was recognized by AARP for her hard work in the fight against hunger. She received an award of $2500.00 for the ministry to use toward food and nutrition classes. Recognizing the need in Chicago’s Back of the Yard’s neighborhood, she started the program that has grown to provide assistance to 350 households each week.

Eventually, she learned of additional services that those families needed. Sr. Joellen brought those connections to Casa Catalina; services such as government benefit screenings and referrals to Catholic Charities programs. She is continually seeking additional volunteers and donations to further assist her clients. Congratulations Sister Joellen, you are truly a Leader of Hope.
