Ministries

With $1.50 in her pocket and a dream to serve others in her heart, Catherine Kasper, foundress of the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ, built her first little house which became a home for widows and orphans, a place of welcome for the poor and a center from which she and her companions went forth to care for the sick.

From that very simple beginning in 1851, Poor Handmaids have continued to build. The “little houses” of today may look different from the original ones, but they are still a welcoming presence for those seeking simple, loving care.
