Gerardo Snapshot

Food, clothing, shelter, care…

Everyone needs them, everyone deserves them, but not everyone receives them. You can help change that with a donation to the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ.

Raul left home at 15 because of an abusive, alcoholic father. He worked at different jobs until he was diagnosed as HIV positive. Now, at age 29 he is homeless, his bed the hard concrete pavement or rocky ground. Raul is dying from AIDS and needs support.

Gerardo, 66, has been in jail for 22 years. He contacted HIV there. Due to overcrowding, lack of health care services, and the severity of his illness, he is being released with nowhere to go but the streets.

There are many other “Rauls” and Gerardos” on the streets of Coatzacoalcos, Mexico who face similar circumstances.

It is not only the men who are left homeless. Women are often abandoned by their husbands who have moved further north. They too, find their only home on the streets of the city, and their only food what they receive by begging.

Argelia Snapshot

Argelia’s home is the local bus stop in Mapachapa. The cement bench serves as her bed and living room. There is no plumbing and no protection from nature’s elements. Aspirants from the PHJC house in Mapachapa bring her food five days a week. Argelia loves to read and the newspapers in which her food is wrapped serve as her library.

Alicia is skin and bone due to her sporadic access to food. She has lived on the streets for almost ten years. Creative, she usually parades in a newspaper skirt. As with so many women of the street, Alicia and Argelia are able to survive the days, but the night’s darkness brings fear and danger.

But there are those who see the plight of these men and women and are determined to do something.

With the help of friends in Mexico, the Poor Handmaids are planning to build a shelter for the homeless. Land has been acquired and building documents are underway. “La Casita de Catalina” or “Little House of Catherine” will provide a home for women like Alicia and Argelia, and a hospice for Raul, Gerardo and others dying from AIDS.

We invite you to partner with us in this special project to help the homeless and dying. Your gift, along with those of our partners in Mexico, can help make this shelter a reality. Every dollar raised will provide the bricks and mortar to raise the walls and roof.

With every dollar you will know that you are giving these men and women the food, shelter and care that they deserve.
